The Tables

Ping pong area in Bryant Park

The project evolved over several iterations in several years, transforming the area into a beloved and well-used space. Originally a small experiment of sponsored ping pong tables in an underutilized area, Julie designed the space from the beginning, worked with several sponsors in a succession of years, and later oversaw the final design.

Each year, the team responded to challenges by implementing low-budget improvements to the space's functionality in conjunction with programming changes. A persistent challenge was a lack of inclusivity, with the space being dominated by mostly male, experienced, and dedicated players. Using learnings from the years of iterating, Julie spearheaded a comprehensive redesign, combined with innovative programming, leading to a friendlier environment for casual players, women, and children. The revamped design featured vibrant colors, branding, distinctive surfacing and furniture— creating a welcoming, playful space.
